Sharing Web Links

In addition to typing your text for sending to chat participants, you can also paste text that you have copied from elsewhere. A popular example of this is for sharing web links of interest. You can paste (or type) a web URL into the message box and send it -- participants will see it as a clickable link. When a chat participant clicks on the link, the chat program will attempt to open it in a new browser window or a new browser tab. If the participant's browser is configured to block pop-up windows, the link will not open, and the participant may also be dumped out of chat.

The solution is to configure the browser's pop-up blocking to allow the chat program to open a pop-up. Here are instructions to configure  two popular browsers. Two choices of methodology are given, but either one achieves the desired result. The words are many, but the mouse clicks are few.

Firefox 3.0.4 Internet Explorer 7
Choice 1 Click and see what happens
  • Click on any link in the chat window during a chat session. (To do this on your own, you can log into chat at any time, type something easy like www.news.com, then click on it after you send it to the chat window.)
  • If you have pop-ups blocked initially, when you click on a link in the chat window, a message appears saying
Firefox prevented this site from opening a pop-up window.
  • To the right of that message is an Options button.
  • Click on that button and click the top-most message that says Allow pop-ups for client0.addonchat.com.
  • Then when you click on the link in the chat window, the link will open in a new tab or new window without dumping you out of chat. The pop-up block exception is recorded for all future sessions of the browser.
Choice 2  Configure from the Firefox menu bar:
(You do not need to be logged into chat.)
  • Click Tools, Options
  • Click on the Content tab
  • Verify or put a check mark in the box Block pop-up windows (assuming you want to block most pop-ups)
  • Click the button named Exceptions
  • In the box Address of web sites: enter client0.addonchat.com
  • Click Allow
  • Click Close
  • Click OK

  • When you click there, select Always allow pop-ups from this site
